"Compatible with AJAX"

What does a pure client-side javascript widget have to do with a server-side asynchronous communication protocol that simulates DHTML? It seems like both accomplish the same thing. Unless the server-side "feeder" object for the grid, such as an asp:listbox that is used to populate the javascript array that feeds the grid is "AJAXed" so as to avoid a page refresh?
