I GIVE UP - CheckedList Help Needed

I'm trying to use the CheckedList control that is in 'examples/new/controls.htm' and also at:
http://www.activewidgets.com/ui.checkedlist/

I can't figure out how to set some of the items as initially checked.

Also, how do I retrieve the value (checked or unchecked) of a list item?

you have obj.setSelectedItems([2, 3]);
